There are different types of part-time student employment opportunities you can pursue. Students, especially freshmen, often seek out on-campus opportunities. Here are some considerations to get you started on your job search:
Getting Started
We recommend starting with 8-12 hours of availability if possible. Review your class schedule and incorporate times you need to be at the library, working in your study groups, and any possible labs. Don't forget about clubs, organizations and activities you're involved in. It's great to get involved in many things, you just need to think about how to factor those commitments into your schedule.
Is the job you’re interested in on-campus, or is it off-campus, requiring transportation? Are you familiar with the IU Campus Bus and Bloomington Transit schedules? It is free to ride the Bloomington buses with your Crimson Card. Be sure to allow yourself enough time to get from class to your work location.
Have you had a previous job? Were there some things that you liked about that job? What skills did you develop? Are you looking for something different this time? Are you wanting to build specific skills you don’t currently have?
All students intending on working on- or off-campus should bring acceptable Form I-9 documents with them. These documents need to be the unexpired, original copies. That means photocopies, scans, or screenshots are not acceptable forms. Students must have these documents submitted with their I-9 paperwork in order to begin working.
Work-study
Some students may be eligible for a work-study award as part of their financial aid package. There will be jobs posted on campus designated as 'work-study', meaning only students with this award are qualified to apply. Students with WS can also apply to jobs on-campus that are not designated as 'work-study'!
Non-work-study
Most students will be looking for non-work-study jobs. These are available without regard to financial situations and FAFSA. Students can apply to any job on campus that is not labeled specifically as an opportunity for students with work-study only.
There are always both work-study and non-work-study jobs available.

Jobs on Campus
Many on-campus departments post part-time jobs on Jobs at IU. Select "Bloomington, Indiana" under location and "Part Time Employee" or "Part Time Student Employee" under Job Family in the side bar to show only on-campus student employment.
If you qualify for Federal Work Study, you can also select "Work Study Undergrad" under Job Family, but remember ANY on-campus student position qualifies for FWS funding.
Tap into your academic network
By talking with your academic department and professors, you will be networking and potentially learn about opportunities related to your major. Some departments announce job openings by word-of-mouth before posting the positions officially. This can be particularly fruitful for research positions.
