Work Study

What is work-study?

Students may be eligible for a work-study award as part of their financial aid package and they will look for a work-study job. Student Central has the latest information about work-study.

Work Study FAQs

Review your Student Financial Aid package or contact Student Central to inquire about your Work Study status.

No, you do not have to hold a job. A few weeks into the semester, this line on your financial aid package will be removed. This will not penalize you in any way, nor would you have to pay the amount back anywhere. This will update your total financial aid package to have more room for grants, scholarships, or loans to be acquired.

Yes! If you have found a job after the Work Study line has disappeared from your financial aid package, simply contact Student Central to work through adding it back to your account.

The most beneficial part of having Work Study is availability of jobs. As a FWS student, employers are given funding from the federal government to help cover the cost of your paycheck. Essentially, this means employers can hire you and use less of their budget to cover your wages. Therefore, it gives them more of a reason to hire you over a non-FWS student! Any job on campus is available to accept your Work Study award, whether it's designated or not. Have your potential employer contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance to learn how to activate your FWS award.

Any job on IUB's campus qualifies for you to accept your work study award, whether it's designated 'work study' or not. Have your on-campus employer contact Office of Student Financial Assistance to get this set up for you! As well as our on-campus positions, we have several employers in the Bloomington area that can accept Federal Work Study as well - see the list toward the bottom of this page!

As a work study student, you are paid the same as any other part-time student employee on campus. You will get a paycheck that you can sign up to be directly deposited to your bank through the Bursar. On your financial aid package, you will see a specific number associated with your award. That number represents the amount you can earn in a FWS position that semester. Once this sum has been reached, your employer would need to pay the entirety of your wages. Talk with your employer about this before you reach the earning limit!
